Planning a foreign trip?
If you are planning a foreign trip it's important to understand the healthcare system in the country or countries you'll be visiting. Many Medicare Advantage and some Medicare Supplement plans offer limited out of country coverage capped at $50,000 to $250,000. Generally, they provide an "after the medical event" form to claim benefit reimbursement. Usually, the reimbursements are made at the Medicare Reasonable and Customary (MRC) rate for services rendered for urgent or emergancy care - not voluntary care. Any "gap" between the amount billed and MRC rate you will be responsible.
Cruise ships have crazy expensive rates for their onboard medical doctors - $100/minute or more, not uncommon. A large GAP is likely; if you are a "frequent utilizer at home" you should pay for an extra level of insurance to protect yourself financially.
